The Escape
GROUP EXHIBITION
Fire Escape is doing it again!
During 2022, the year of Fire Escape’s 10th anniversary, Anna Garcia Solana, the Director of Fire Escape had been researching for artists based in Australia and likewise working with the resident artists based in Europe. Curating across the globe The Escape, a group art exhibition that mixes artists from everywhere. Getting ready this art proposal in the same way that Fire Escape did in Barcelona ten years ago. The Escape commemorates the tenth anniversary of the project. The exhibition collects ten artists, one for each year, across disciplines.
Ten years ago Fire Escape was opened in Barcelona. An art place where to develop any kind of art project that you can imagine. Since the beginning Fire Escape has been a place that supports creative thinking, critical development, and intellectual skills. Helping artists to promote their careers. The theory and the practice. Fire Escape became an independent art referent in the city. A place for free thinking where to learn sharing knowledge, develop thoughts and theories in art terms and apply the knowledge and skills to contemporary art.
Currently based in Melbourne, Fire Escape works with artists from everywhere in the globe, being an international art project. The Escape is the first group show in Melbourne that reflects the curator’s work for the whole of 2022 to commemorate the 10th year of the project and promote the next phase of the project establishing the art gallery in Australia.
The topic proposed, likewise in Barcelona 10 years ago, is the ‘fire escape’ concept as an object or idea. The ten artists selected for the exhibition have been working the whole year under this idea, developing thoughts, and theories, and introducing the statement to their art practice, and all of them have created an original and exclusive artwork based on the statement of the show. The Escape collects, photography, video art, sculpture, art installation, painting, objects, screen printing, and collage.
Metaphorically and subjectively, the object has infinite meanings. As an object, Fire Escape Contemporary Art connects with a way to escape, freedom, chaos, fire, order, new, old, revolution, change, transition, reversal, difference, a place to reflect, to think.
As a concept, Fire Escape’s philosophy is based on the matter, which is always present over the changes in nature. Following the Principle of Chemistry, the matter is not created or destroyed, it is only transformed. Likewise, Fire Escape transforms the established into something different. Therefore fire as a purifying element, which transforms matter, in this case, art. Fire Escape uses the stairs to escape from the fire and rise from the ashes like The Phoenix.
Fire Escape transforms the usual ways to show art across implications, statements and disciplines. Using art to express deepest beliefs, reporting inconsistencies, and talking about feelings and concerns. Moreover, establishing dialogues with the public, based on the critical spirit of art. Raising and promoting meaningful art and the love for aesthetics.
10 years 10 artists. This is all 2022 work that will see the light in March 2023, the anniversary month. An ambitious project that mixes artists from Europe and artists based in Australia.
